Darwin the nation's most 'exciting' city, says PM

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull reckons Darwin is the most “exciting” city in Australia right now.

At a business lunch held at Sky City yesterday, Mr Turnbull said the people of Darwin and its proximity to Asia were at a “gigantic advantage” over other parts of Australia in terms of taking advantage of economic development.

“Darwin is the most exciting city in Australia to be in right now,” he said.

Mr Turnbull dropped by the NT to say hi on his way home from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in the Philippines, where he met Mr Obama and other world leaders.

The NT News’ newest advocate, who this week told US President Barack Obama to take out a subscription if he wanted to know when Northern Territory assets were being sold to the Chinese, was photographed taking a morning walk surrounded by security detail on the Esplanade.

The PM told local radio station Mix FM he was “flattered” to have been depicted as Crocodile Dundee on today’s front page of the NT News.

“I can’t tell you how flattered I am to be mocked up as Crocodile Dundee,” Mr Turnbull told Mix FM presenter Katie Woolf.

“I’m always happy to support Territory newspapers and Territory businesses so I’m hoping we can drive the subscription levels of the NT News as a result of this publicity.”

There was no shortage of people lining up to meet the PM but Chief Minister Adam Giles wasn’t one of them.

Mr Giles’ office said he was in Alice Springs for meetings, including with Tourism NT.

The Chief chartered a last- minute 4500km flight to Darwin from trade talks in Vietnam when toppled PM Tony Abbott extended his stay in March 2014.

Mr Turnbull made a visit to the Robertson Barracks and even his new mate the NT News. However the main event of his visit was opening the redeveloped home of the Menzies School of Health Research.

“Darwin is really at one of the most interesting points in the most exciting time in human history,” Mr Turnbull said. “That’s why it’s terrific to see so much great research being done here in this very exciting dynamic, 21st Century city.”
